Time to Depart

DISCUSSING THE TIME TO DEPART - Is avoided by most people like the plague.

I do not know why? It is as if, by not considering this subject they can some how avoid it. There are brackets at either end of our life span. These are called ( Birth and Death ). We have no control over these what so ever. These dates being controlled by a third party. It is FACT we all are BORN and we all DIE. We do however have a great deal of influence over the way we live the intervening years.

WE HAVE LIVED OUR LIFE - Hopefully to the FULL. And by CAREFUL and SENSIBLE planning, have ENJOYED our RETIREMENT.

NOW WE NEED - To complete the picture and plan to depart with dignity. Making sure that our loved ones are protected as well as possible. Leaving them with fond memories, and and as comfortable as we can possibly leave them.

TO CHOOSE HOW WE CELEBRATE OUR DEPARTURE - From this life can be fun and extremely rewarding, particularly if you involve your loved ones in the detail.

WE HAVE BEEN HERE BEFORE - Take stock, realise your worth. Make a decision as to what you want to do with it.

MAKE A WILL - This is very important, particularly, if you have strong feelings about where you want your estate to go.

NOT MAKING A WILL - Leaves your estate intestate. This means that ANYONE who can prove that they have a vested interest. Can lay claim to it. It is amazing how they come out of the wood work. In fact some people make a living out of claiming on intestate estates,if not for themselves, on behalf of others.

The upshot being that your loved ones may not receive your legacy, or will only receive a small proportion of it.

IF YOU HAVE NO DEPENDANTS - Then the Government will happily absorb it within there greedy ever demanding coffers, and you will turn in your grave.

Remember - You paid tax on it when you earned, spent, saved, invested it, and now to cap it all, because you failed to make a will you HAND OVER what is left as a leaving present.

That's dammed decent of you. REMEMBER. If you have been prudent and accrued a healthy legacy. Then the Tax man will be calling for Death Duties any way.

TAKE ADVICE on ways of reducing this burden.

SIT DOWN with your partner, and decide what you want to do.

MAKE A LIST - of all your assets ( it should not take long ) I guarentee that you know your situation more acurately than you did at the time of retirement.

MAKE A LIST OF ALL YOUR RELATIVES - Decide what you wish your legacy to be. Do you want to leave something for each of them. If this is the case then extremly careful planning will be needed.

MAYBE you want to reward your favourites, if so, then be aware that a certain amount of bitterness will ensue, after you depart. IS THIS REALLY WHAT YOU WANT?

PERHAPS - You want to put your grand children through college. What ever you decide it is your choice. This choice should be excercised as early as possible, whilst you are in the correct frame of mind. So as to be fully aware of your requirements.

THIS IS - Particularly important. If you wish to have parts of your estate put into a TRUST or make a GIFT. This should be done as early as possible. So as to reduce death duty obligations. ( Take Advice from a Qualified Representative)

MAYBE YOU WOULD LIKE - To Plan and Pay for your own funeral, so as to ease the grief of your love ones SOME PEOPLE - choose to leave nothing to their relatives, leaving everything to a charity or placing it in trust, for some favoured cause, college etc. If this is their preferred course of action, it would not have been possible. IF THEY HAD NOT MADE A WILL.

ALTERNATIVELY - You may not give a dam, and let them get on with it. Depends how you wish to be REMEMBERED,

ONE FINAL POINT - Think carefully as to who you appoint as your trustees. As they can, if not capable, make a hell of a mess.
